Installing Ubuntu Server is an easy procedure. even if you have never installed a Linux Server before, you will find that installing Ubuntu Server is much like installing a normal windows application, almost just accepting the default settings.
let’s begin.
I always use a VM ( virtual machine ) for my testing, but Ubuntu Server can be installed on a regular desktop or laptop as well. down the ISO image from Ubuntu website from here http://www.ubuntu.com/download/server/download once you download the image, burn it to a CD, or DVD. if you are using a VM like me, you can boot directly from the ISO file.. after booting, the installation wizard will come up:
select your language and hit Enter on your keyboard. choose Install Ubuntu Server on the next screen and hit Enter again:
choose the language you want to use in the installation process, and hit Enter:
then select your location, and hit enter again.
choose NO for the option to detect the keyboard layout automatically. hit enter.
Choose the keyboard layout country. hit Enter again.
Choose the Layout again, and hit Enter. enough with the Enters. now the wizard will go through the hardware detection process. choose a hostname for your server and select continue:
Next, the wizard will try to detect your time zone. mine was detected correctly, so yes click on Yes:
Next select the partition method. select Guided – use entire disk and hit enter:
Select the drive to partition on the next step, and click on enter:
Choose Yes Write the changes to disk on the next screen, and hit Enter:
The installation should begin:
After the base system has been installed. the wizard will prompt you for a username. enter then username of your choice, and hit enter:
choose a password for your server. then choose to continue. don’t forget to validate the password on the next screen as well.
Choose No on the following screen. we don’t want to encrypt the home directory. hit enter:
Don’t enter any proxy server settings if you don’t have any.. select and click continue:
the wizard will continue with the software installation:
choose No automatic updates on the following screen, and hit Enter:
Next choose the software you want to install on the server. most of the time you will need SSH console access, and Apache, PHP, and MySQL server. so by using the spacebar key on your keyboard choose OpenSSH Server and LAMP Server. that is if you are building the server to host a dynamic website like WordPress and Joomla, otherwise just install SSH server:
Choose the root password for MySQL if you chose to install LAMP:
Select Yes to install the GRUB boot loader:
and that’s it. you have finished the installation:
click on continue to reboot the server. after the server reboots, you should be brought to the login Ubuntu console.. and your server should be ready to go.
as you can see the installation is very simple. I think the hardest part was taking all those screenshots during the installation process, because basically what it takes is just hitting the enter key on the keyboard.
